The Special & Institutional Section sponsors several programs at the annual fall NLA/NEMA Conferences, and often sponsors or co-sponsors a program in the spring each year. For upcoming programs click here

An informal networking opportunity for current and prospective Special & Institutional Section members.ˇ Caring for the Mind@ your libraryŽ: NLA/NEMA Preconference, 9:00 - 4:00 September 28 2005. Cornhusker Hotel, Lincoln.
A full day program devoted to mental health issues in libraries. The morning sessions featured speakers discussing Nebraska state mental health initiatives to relocate people in their own communities, community mental health programs affecting libraries, and a panel discussion on helping librarians to understand and assist customers with mental health issues. Afternoon sessions focused on reference interviews, collection development and internet resources on mental health.

Tours of the Polley Music Library and the Jane Pope Geske Heritage Room of Nebraska Authors, both located at the Bennet Martin Public Library. Hosts Carolyn Dow, Linda Helfman, and Meredith McGowan provided a 50-minute guided tour of resources and services available in these unique Nebraska collections.

A pre-conference co-sponsored by the NLA Special and Institutional,
Paraprofessional, and School, Children and Young People's sections, and the
Nebraska Educational Media Association. The preconference focused on how to
provide services to the Spanish speaking community.

Western Trails Project: Friday, October 8, 2004 9:10 - 10:00
a.m. Grand Room, Holiday Inn. How did the digitization of original
material relating to Nebraska Western Trails go? What is happening now? A panel
of Western Trails Project participants examined and showcased this multi-state

Music of Old Nebraska. Friday, October 8, 2004 1:50 -
2:40 p.m. Royal Room, Holiday Inn. A step back in time to a gentler and
more elegant Nebraska with musicians Carolyn Dow and Linda Helfman of the
Polley Music Library , who performed a program of pre-1923 music from
Nebraska and described their sheet music digitization project.

Consumer Health: MEDLINE PLUS & CHIRS: Training the Public to
Use Health Information. Preconference Program Wednesday, October 23, 2002
Presented by Teresa Hartman, Special Projects Coordinator for the National
Network of Libraries of Medicine, and Roxanne Cox, Head of Reference at the
University of Nebraska Medical Center. What Internet resources exist here in
Nebraska that link the public to health information? Participants in this
hand-on workshop had exercises and discussion aimed at developing medical
reference interview skills and identifying and evaluating Internet health
information resources.

Organizational Decision-Making and Conflict Resolution: What is
my Role? Friday, October 25, 2002, 9:00 am.
Presented by Elizabeth (Betsy) R. Kosier, Executive Director of the Mediation
Center: Resources for Collaborative Decision-Making. Through a participatory
approach, Betsy engaged participants in an exploration of decision-making and
conflict resolution in the context of their own organizations, and encourage
participants to examine the roles and expectations of various processes and
procedures.

efficient, sharing ideas, how to prioritize, how to save time and money through
resource sharing.

A one-day workshop presented by Annette Gohlke, co-owner of Library
Benchmarking International, a publishing and training firm dedicated to helping
librarians achieve excellence in their libraries. Co-Sponsored with the NLA
College and University and Information Technology and Access Round Table.

Networking: Ideas and Suggestions for Peer Interactions
Thursday, October 26, 2000, 9:35 - 10:25 a.m.
Presenters were Brenda Ealey, Administrator, Southeast (NE) Library System;
Lisa Kelly, Information Services Coordinator, Nebraska Library Commission; Pam
Scott, Library Consultant, Nebraska Library Commission; Ted Smith, Director,
Norfolk (NE) Public Library; Carol Speicher, Administrator, Northeast (NE)
Library System; Barbara Voeltz, Librarian, Nebraska Game and Parks. The panel
discussed the value of peer networking including the hows and whys. This was an
open-ended discussion designed for sharing ideas and suggestions.

Preparedness.
Friday, October 27, 2000, 3:45 - 4:35 The presenter Katherine L. Walter,
Chair, Special Collections and Preservation Department, University of Nebraska -
Lincoln. Basic information on how to prepare for disasters in libraries. What to
do to mitigate disasters--planning documents, supplies, and training.

Census 2000: Why and How Census Data Can Help Your Library.
David Fifer, Research Associate at the UNO Center for Public Affairs Research,
talked about the upcoming census and why it is important for libraries to get
involved to ensure a good count. He discussed the importance of census data in
planning library programs, assessing user needs in the community (economic and
cultural factors) and making budget requests to city government or
school/college administrators.

Good Federal Publications Every Library Should Have
James Shaw, Reference Librarian at UNO, shared some of his favorites. You don't
have to be a documents librarian to love these! Tips on avoiding consumer fraud,
cancer publications, information about foreign countries for travelers and
school projects, statistics, can be great additions to any library.

Judith Siess, editor and publisher of the "One Person Library" and head of
Information Bridges International, Inc. , presented a one-day course on SOLO
librarianship. Co-sponsored by the NLA Special & Institutional and Public
Library Sections, the Nebraska Regional Library Systems, the Special Libraries
Association, Omaha chapter, and Central Community College, Grand Island Campus.
