Dr. Mary Pipher
Author: The Middle of Everywhere: The World's Refugees Come to our Town |
| Dr. Johnson is an Associate Professor of
Communication at St. John's University in Collegeville, MN. Her
doctorate is from the Univesrity of Minnesota. At. St. John's she
teaches a variety of courses on media and society, specializing in
media literacy. Katie also studied Drama at the Julliard School
in New York City. In addition to teaching, she works as a
communications consultant, teaching presentation skills, and coaching
performance pieces. Her presentation will be on Media Literacy
for Librarians. Following her keynote, she will present a
question and answer session on media literacy. She will also make
a presentation on tips for effective storytelling. The
presentation will include easy-to-accomplish physical and vocal
strategies to enhance the storytelling experience for you and your
audience. Katie is a native Nebraskan whose father is a Professor
of Mathematics at UNL. |
The Nebraska Library Commission is proud to
sponsor Dr. Mary Pipher as the Leadership Development Keynote Speaker
for the Nebraska Library Association/Nebraska Educational Media
Association Conference. In Mary Pipher's book, The Middle of Everywhere:
The World's Refugee Come to our Town, she tells the story of how
Lincoln, Nebraska becomes a gathering place for refugees from all
corners of the globe. Shee will lead us through and exploration
of how "cultural brokers," (teachers, case workers, public health
nurses, library staff, volunteers, and American friends) can help new
arrivals make intentional decisions about what to accept and what to
reject in America, easing us into each other's culture. Three of
Pipher's books, Reviving
Ophelia, The Shelter
of Each Other, and Another
Country were New York Times best sellers. Reviving
Ophelia was #1 for 27 weeks and on the list for 154
weeks. The keynote session will include a book signing. For
