Candidates for Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect

Roger CrossRoger Cross

I am the Collection Development/Acquisitions librarian for Doane College. I also do reference; database management; maintain our library’s webpage, and a variety of other tasks like hooking up the new fax machine or  moving funiture “as needed.” A virtue of small academic libraries is the chance to do a wide-range of things that don’t fit into any particular job-title.

I received a M.A. in History from Portland State University in Oregon and completed my M.L.S. at the State University of New York at Buffalo. I had been working towards a Ph.D at Buffalo, when I suddenly realized that not only would I probably be fifty before it was finished, but that once completed I’d just be another unemployed history Ph.D. It was this realization that spurred me into the M.L.S. program, and eventually brought me to Nebraska where I am happily employed in Perkins library.

I have many interests in academic librarianship, including: finding ways to incorporate the library into classrooms through courseware like Blackboard; the possibility of reaching out to students through Facebook or MySpace, etc.; increasing the use of our electronic resources and countering the over-reliance of students to web search engines; and finally my Holy Grail is to make our resources more user-friendly through webpage design and navigation.

As to the latter, I am pleased to be one of the task-force volunteers for the C&U website redesign. This allows me not only to contribute in some way to the C&U, but allows me to work with colleagues outside of my library and increase my understanding of web design.

I have many interests outside of the profession, but my main focus is on my wife, Jeanne, and our four year old twins. They have provided me with a world of opportunities to learn about time management and multi-tasking; plus, I can recite from memory every line of “Moo, Baa, La La La."

Michael Lacroix Michael Lacroix

Michael LaCroix is currently the Director, Reinert-Alumni Memorial Library, Creighton University.  He received his A.B. in Psychology from MacMurray College (Illinois); his M.S.L.S. from the University of Kentucky; and an M.B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Michael has been active in various library associations including NLA, ACRL, LAMA, NCLA, and SELA.  He currently serves as Chair, NLA Legislative Committee; Co-Chair, ACRL President’s Program for 2007 Committee; and Member, ACRL Budget and Finance Committee.  He has also served on various committees for the College Library Section of ACRL and was Secretary in the early ‘90s.  In addition, he has working in variety of academic libraries in KY, NC, OH, PA, and NE.  With the significant changes taking place in the delivery of information and services to students and faculty, he believes now is an exciting and challenging time to be an academic librarian.
