2007 NLA Poster Session Winners

Congratulations to the winners of the Poster Session competition! Winners in each category are set out below, along with the comments from the judges at SCORR Marketing in Kearney:

  1. Best Theme – Holdrege Area Public Library
We liked how the graphic theme of the two back to back characters is carried throughout the materials, from library card to the Friends of the Library Book Bag.
  2. Best Headline/Title – North Platte Public Library
We liked the whole idea of presenting the library as a “teen café.” The design is effective and consistently applied. We could definitely imagine the appeal to teens!
  3. Best Design – UNO Criss Library READ Posters
Although there are many interesting design materials in this entry from Omaha, we want to single out the READ posters for being colorful, vibrant and focused.
  4. Best Use of Multimedia – Crete Public Library
This is fabulous. What a great idea! This candy bar elevates the annual report from the commonplace, creating something especially effective and memorable.
  5. Most un-Library-like – Holdrege Area Public Library
This was a difficult category to judge. We chose Holdrege because the motive seemed most “corporate:’ to us.

Keep up the good work, and be thinking about projects you undertake this year and how they might be inspiring to others at the 2008 NLA Conference Poster Session!

The NLA Diversity Committee invites you to attend "There's Someone Queer @ the Library: Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Issues in Libraries," co-presented by Kim Shelley (Lincoln City Libraries) and Debbie Krahmer (UNL).

"It's no mystery--Nebraska libraries serve patrons from all backgrounds, including gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) individuals. Learn how you can improve your collections and services in big and small ways to better serve the needs of GLBT patrons and library staff through this interactive session. There will be a special emphasis on transgender issues and resources."

Still hungry for more information? Want to hang out with fellow GLBT and Ally librarians? Eager to try out a chocolate fountain? (Secretly dying to get your picture taken with the lesbigaytr?) Then plan on attending the Diversity Committee's GLBT&Ally Mixer! It starts at 9pm Thursday evening, and we'll be having snacks and dippables, as well as wine and the chocolate fountain. Looking for public librarians for National Library of Medicine Focus Group at NLA/NEMA on Thur. Oct. 25 - Free Lunch!

Looking for public librarians for National Library of Medicine Focus Group at NLA/NEMA on Thur. Oct. 25 - Free Lunch!

An important mission of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine is to improve the public's access to information, enabling them to make informed decisions about their health. In many communities, the only resource for health information is the public library. For certain ethnic groups, lower-income and less-educated citizens the public library is the sole source for accessing the Internet. With your skills and knowledge, you can help customers use health information resources effectively and bolster the health information literacy of the community. In turn, this information can empower consumers and facilitate their health care decision-making.

The Regional Medical Library is asking for approximately 15 Nebraska public librarians to participate in a focus group to provide a snapshot of the public library's available resources, staff comfort level in assisting health information customers, and library outreach programs. Your participation in this focus group will greatly assist the MidContinental region's staff in understanding how we can assist you, develop useful health information training programs that will enhance your skills and knowledge, and facilitate partnerships in your community to support consumer health information.

The focus group will be held during NLA/NEMA conference at the Holiday Inn (more details below) on Thursday, Oct. 25 from 12:15-1:15 p.m.

Poster Sessions - Have you got yours ready!!!

Get your campaigns ready, details have changed this year for the Poster Sessions!
[2007 NLA  Poster Session Entry Form]

Display how you promoted your program/event/new library practice/organization/etc. Why reinvent the wheel, share your thoughts with other libraries so they can benefit from your hard work, research, and/or new found success. Get ready to "Toot Your Own Horn", we want to hear about it. You may have done just the thing that another library needs to do, so show them how.

Did you mount a campaign to introduce a new service or resource? Generate enthusiasm in your community for a special program or speaker in your library? If you have made a special effort to market your library's services this year, here is a great opportunity to share your strategy with your colleagues.

We'll make arrangements for you to receive the questions attendees have for your exhibit, so you won't have to hang around, feel free to attend sessions and learn more, so next year you can do this again. Exhibit items should be no taller than 48 inches. Scrapbooks, or just about anything is welcome. http://www.2007nla-nema.info/poster

The Work of Reconciliation: Creating American Indian Library Collections, Services and Programs

NLA Diversity Committee and Paraprofessional Section Present "The Work of Reconciliation: Creating American Indian Library Collections, Services and Programs" by Dr. Naomi Caldwell on October 26, 2007.

Dr. Caldwell, a professor at the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies, University of Rhode Island, former School Media Center Specialist and past president of the American Indian Library Association, will provide information on how to choose American Indian materials for the libraries that will be cultural sensitive and provide accurate information.

Dr. Caldwell has been sharing her expertise with librarians and students through presentations and in book reviews in Broken Flute and other publications. Dr. Caldwell will also address multiculturalism in libraries by discussing the importance of respecting everyone’s culture and providing ideas on how libraries can meet the needs of their diverse communities.

Dr. Caldwell will present three sessions at the NLA/NEMA 2007Conference on Friday, October 26, 2007. Sessions will be held at 8-8:50 a.m., 9-9:50 a.m., and 10-10:50 a.m.

This project was supported in part by state aid funding appropriated by the Nebraska Legislature, granted and administered by the Nebraska Library Commission. This project is funded by the Nebraska Humanities Council, a statewide, non-profit organization cultivating an understanding of our history and culture, and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment. If you enjoy this type of programming, please consider supporting the Council and the Cultural Endowment with a contribution. Donations are matched by state and federal funds. Your support helps to preserve our past and inform our future.

NLA/NEMA Conference 2007

Hello, Everyone! Could it be possible? Is the NLA/NEMA Conference Nebraska Libraries: Charting Paths to the Future only seven weeks away?

Well, it's true! And the release of the fall issue of NLAQ is just around the corner. But if you just can't wait to see the conference schedule, go to the conference website and then click on NLAQ - Conference Information. You'll find a detailed schedule for this action packed, educational, three-day event. You'll also find a registration form available on the web site.

You might notice the registration form is a little different this year. We are not asking for people to select the sessions they'll be attending. So you're just a one page form away from a conference filled with great people and great sessions. Just follow the directions on the form and send it on its way! Keep in mind that separate registrations are required for pre-conference attendance. That information is also available on the conference website.

As you complete your registration, take a moment to consider volunteering to be a room host. It's relatively quick, painless and could even be fun. Think about it!

Hope to see you all in Kearney!

Thanks
Lisa Olivigni

Initial Conference Information

Calling All Librarians!!!

Nebraska is fortunate to be home to many talented, knowledgeable and creative librarians. Here is a great opportunity to share that talent, knowledge and creativity with your colleagues from across the state. The Nebraska Library Association's 2007 Conference will be held in Kearney, October 24 - 26, and NLA's Continuing Education Committee is calling for program proposals.

The proposal form is currently available here. It includes the contact information for all Committee members, so please contact any of us with questions you may have.

Please note that in previous years, there has been some confusion regarding the designation/use of a sponsor for a program you might wish to present. A program sponsor may be an NLA Section, Round Table, NEMA, the Library Commission, etc. The program presenter may or may not be a member of the particular sponsoring group, but the presentation may fall in line with the sponsoring group's goals and interests. When developing a program proposal, please visit with those folks you think most likely would sponsor your program.

Proposals are due March 23, 2007. Submission information is included in the attachment.

So don't miss out on this great opportunity to share your expertise with your fellow librarians. The CE Committee can't wait to hear from you!
