2008 Houchen's Beginning Professional and Mentor of the Year Awards

Nomination are open for Houchen's Beginning Professional (HBP) and Mentor of the Year (HMY) Awards. Please take the time to nominate a deserving colleague for one of these awards. Nomination forms are available on-line at:

2008 Houchen Bindery Beginning Professional Award

The Houchen Bindery Beginning Professional Award is a cash prize sponsored by Houchen Bindery LTD. It is awarded to a beginning librarian or media specialist who has made significant contributions to library and/or media services in the early stages of his/her career. If you know a new professional who has:

  • created innovative programs or services which improved library service in Nebraska
  • made exceptional use of local, state, or national library resources including special
  • grants, made significant contributions toward the betterment of library and community relations
  • been active in professional library organizations on a local, state or national level
Then nominate that person for the Houchen Bindery Beginning Professional Awards.

2008 Mentor of the Year Award

The Mentor of the Year Award is a cash prize is a cash prize sponsored by Houchen Bindery LTD. It will be awarded to an individual who has aided significantly in the professional development of librarians, media specialists or library staff, and, by example, has influenced their careers. If you know someone who has:

  • had extraordinary influence on the professional development of one or more junior staff members
  • encouraged involvement of staff in professional endeavors
  • provided strong leadership
  • set a good example of professional involvement
Then you know someone who deserves the Mentor of the Year Award. Nominate someone today!

ALA Emerging Leaders '09!

Apply today for the ALA's Emerging Leader Program! The deadline for applications is July 31.

Information about the ALA Emerging Leader 2008-9 program is now available! NMRT wants you to apply to the Emerging Leader 2009 program.

One librarian from NLA will be selected to represent our chapter and be involved with ALA professional leadership. NLA will sponsor the Emerging Leader for $1,000 ($500.00 for Annual and MidWinter conferences) for the year.

Applications are due July 31. [application form]

Past Recipient:
Marcia Dority Baker, UNL Law College, 2007-8

Qualifications:

  1. ALA member, and
  2. Young (under 35 years) or new librarians of any age with fewer than 5 years post-MLS experience, and
  3. Recent MLS degree from an ALA or NCATE accredited program or in an MLS program currently, and
  4. Able to attend both ALA conferences and work virtually in between, and
  5. Ready to commit to serve on an ALA, Division, Chapter, or Round Table committee, taskforce or workgroup upon completion of program.

Shirley Olofson Memorial Award announcement

Do you want to attend ALA Annual 2008 in Anaheim, CA, but you're light on the travel funds? Apply by December 15, 2007 for the Shirley Olofson Memorial Award and you may receive a $1000 check to help defray the cost of attendance!

The New Members Round Table invites you to attend the following session at this year’s annual conference:

Emotional and Social Intelligence: When Library Skills Aren’t Enough for Success. Joan Giesecke, Dean, and Nancy Busch, Associate Dean, UNL Libraries will outline the work done in the areas of social and emotional intelligence and show how this can help librarians excel in the future. When having the technical skills of librarianship is not enough, what do you need to know?

We also hope you’ll join us for our annual Conference Connections Mixer. There will be socializing and refreshments. Meet other librarians new to the state or profession. Join us as we present the Houchen Bindery Beginning Professional and Mentor of the Year awards.

Access to language instruction, international news sources, and international satellite feeds, just got easier using the SCOLA! (www.scola.org)

“SCOLA is a non-profit educational organization that receives and re-transmits television programming from around the world in native languages. These programs are available via satellite, cable TV and the Internet to students of language study, ethnic communities, and anyone seeking a global perspective”.

Come and learn how the University of Nebraska Omaha Library has incorporated this cultural resource into their library. We will also visit the SCOLA center that is located 20 miles from Council Bluffs, IA.

“Ask a Geek” from ITART (Information Technology Access Roundtable) will share information about the services provide.

NMRT Meeting

Everyone is invited to attend the next NMRT meeting on Friday, January 19 in Lincoln at the Eiseley Library, 2:00-3:30 p.m. The meeting will focus on the NMRT Spring meeting and ways to get the word out about NMRT.
