2008-2009 Paraprofessional of the Year Award Winner

The 2008-2009 The Paraprofessional of the Year Award winner is Jennifer Wrampe.

Jennifer Wrampe is a great asset to the Nebraska Library Commission. Beth Goble, her supervisor, states that Jennifer does exemplary work, willing do other jobs as assigned, and provides fine customer service for our agency.

Jennifer is a team player and will help with any project whether it is with her department or another department. Jennifer’s full-time position is with the Government Document department but she gracefully took on the job of assisting the Administrative staff by working three-hours a day answering phones, working on mass mailings, filing, placing information on the Commission web pages, and any other task asked of her. We don’t know what we would do without her.

She has been the Publicity & Citations Chair for the Paraprofessional Section for a few years now, this makes her a member of the Para Board and that pretty much puts her on every committee that the Board forms by default. The Board works as a team in brainstorming, troubleshooting, and mostly getting things done in a efficient and timely manner. The Para Board can come up with new items every year and as a Board member you’re expected to fill in as you can. Jennifer has done that exceptionally well, filling in at the Para Table at Fall Conference, helping with the past 2 Scavenger Hunts, making the Raffle Baskets inviting and yummy, taking pictures throughout all of the Para activities, taking registrations at Spring meeting, always showing up early and leaving later after all is done, pretty much what all paras do in their libraries, Jennifer does it for the Para Section.

I believe that Jennifer Wrampe is a wonderful example of how dedicated and hardworking our paraprofessionals are in their respective libraries. I also believe that Jennifer will represent the title of Paraprofessional of the Year with dignity and grace.

Jennifer will receive a one-year paid membership to NLA in the Paraprofessional section and a cash gift. A certificate will be awarded at the NLA/NEMA Fall Conference Paraprofessional section luncheon.

Support Your Favorite Fall Conference Session Topics

You may remember that the Paraprofessional Section asked for ideas for potential Fall Conference sessions a little while ago. Well, we've had a fantastic response, both on and off the blog. (Thank you, everyone!) We've received fourteen suggestions, and while we'd be happy to accept more, we also need to start narrowing things down. We hope to sponsor four or five sessions.

Please visit our blog and post comments in support of the sessions you'd be most interested in attending. Anonymous comments are accepted, and you need not be a Para. Topics in greatest demand, and for which we can identify potential speakers, will rise to the top of the list.

Invitation from the Paraprofessional Section

The NLA Paraprofessional Section would like to invite you to join the Para Section when renewing your NLA memberships or joining the NLA for the first time.

The Paraprofessional Section contributes to the professional growth and development of its members and promotes activities related to paraprofessional interests. All library staff benefit from professional growth and interaction with colleagues. Paraprofessional section members can take advantage of scholarships to attend conferences and Legislative Day.

Library paraprofessionals or support staff, fill a variety of positions within the library. Some are non-degreed, multi-degreed or working on their Masters of Library Science degree. All work to serve the needs of library patrons and keep the library operating effectively and professionally.

Wanted: Suggestions for Fall Conference Sessions

It's never too early to think about Annual Conference, so the Paraprofessional Section has started to gather suggestions for Fall Conference sessions on our blog.

Are you planning to attend the NLA/NEMA 2009 Fall Conference? Do you have an idea for a session you wish someone would sponsor? Let us know!

And if you're a member of a different NLA section or roundtable, and you have an session you'd like the Paras to co-sponsor with your group, we're open to that, too!

Just visit our blog and add a comment with your suggestion!

The Paraprofessional Section Board will look at all the ideas and submit as many as we can to NLA for consideration. If someone posts a session idea you really love, add a comment in support of it. Ideas with widespread support will move to the top of our list.

Together, let's make 2009 a great NLA/NEMA Fall Conference for all!

Paraprofessional Scholarship

The Paraprofessional Section of the Nebraska Library Association wants you! What’s the Paraprofessional Section? We’re support staff, administrative assistants, public library directors, and librarian assistants all across the state. We’re also the folks who gave you Library Jeopardy, Cultural Beliefs, and Map to a Successful Meeting sessions at the 2005 NLA/NEMA conference and The Great Library Safari: Dinos, Llamas and Lizards and Cultural Competence sessions at the 2006 NLA/NEMA conference. We also partnered with other sections for the 2005 Caring for the Mind Preconference and the 2004 Hispanic Voices @ your library® Preconference. The Paraprofessional Section has the one and only teleconferenced Spring Meeting- this year’s theme is Explore and Experience Your Library. Some of you might know us best for the tequila basket raffled off at the 2005 Conference.

To sum it up, we’re the section striving to meet your educational (and socializing) needs!

But enough about us, you say, what about the free money? Well, we know that many NLA members are able to join just one section, often the one your institution feels suits it best. We would like to give you the opportunity to join the Paraprofessional Section if you aren’t already a member-with ten $10 scholarships. These scholarships will cover the cost to add a section to your current NLA membership. You may add a section by sending Kathy Thomsen a membership form and sending a check for 25% of your basic dues. If you’d like to receive one of these scholarships, or have questions, please contact Jenni Puchalla, jennip@alltel.net. (You may also change from one section to another at no additional cost.)
