I’m not quite sure what happened, but numerous members have reported this problem. Once there’s an answer, I’ll be sure to pass it on. If you haven't already renewed your membership for 2008, now is the time to renew! If your renewal is postmarked before July 1, the the Sections and Round Tables you select will receive a percentage of your dues to help with programs and other expenses. Also, if you are a current member, you will receive a discount when you register for Conference 2008. The 2008 NLA/NEMA Conference will be held October 15-October 17 at the Cornhusker Marriott in Lincoln, NE. This message was sent out to all NLA members, so if you have already paid your 2008 dues, you can disregard this part of the message.

Also, we have exciting news! The NLA elections will be held online this year! You will be able to vote for NLA officers and officers in the Sections and Round Tables to which you belong. It has been suggested that you go online prior to the election to check your e-mail address for currency, to determine that your records are accurate, and that you are registered for the correct Section and Round Tables, as this will be important with the coming elections. Nebraska Library Association (NLA) Announces Internet Site Coordinator Search

The Nebraska Library Association seeks an individual with fluency in FTP and HTML, knowledge of Unix and web servers, and demonstrated understanding of the principles of web site design and organization. This individual must have access to hardware and software necessary to fulfill the job responsibilities of Internet Site Coordinator. Library education coursework and experience with the Nebraska Library Association is preferred.

Duties of the NLA Internet Site Coordinator include, but are not limited to the following:

Create a visual layout consistent with the principles of good web design.
Update web site content within 5-10 days of notification, or solicit updates from NLA members as necessary.
Install and support membership software, Memberclicks in particular. Maintain member and board email groups and assist with maintenance of member records.
Maintain current links to web sites maintained by others, including NLA sections and round tables. Arrange for space on the host server for each section and round table as needed, and provide technical support and/or maintenance of these sites as needed.

The Internet Site Coordinator will receive a stipend that is determined annually by the Executive board of NLA. Depending on experience and qualifications, the beginning stipend will range between $150.00 to $175.00 per month, to be paid the first of each month for the previous month’s work.

Anticipated start date is November 1, 2008. The position will be open until filled. Review of applications will begin immediately, however.

Seeking Mad Hatter nominations

The School, Children’s and Young People’s Section of NLA is accepting nominations for the Mad Hatter Award 2008. This award is given annually to a member of the Nebraska Library Profession who has made an outstanding contribution to School, Children’s and Young People’s librarianship and library development.

The recipient will be selected on the basis of all of the following criteria:

Imaginative interpretation of library services
Development of innovative and creative programming for children and young adults
Demonstration of professional contributions to regional, state, and national library organizations, publications, and/or presentations

The nominee MUST be a member of the School, Children’s and Young People’s Section of NLA.

Dear Friends:

The deadline has been extended to submit your nominees for the 2008 Meritorious Service Award and the Mari Sandoz Award to June 30, 2008. Please consider nominating those folks who deserve recognition for their contributions in the two awards categories or forward this message to your colleagues, inviting them to submit nominees.

The Meritorious Service Award is given annually to a person, corporation, or organization which has contributed to the improvement of library service in a local community, region, state agency, or in library legislation.

The Mari Sandoz Award recognizes significant, enduring contribution to the Nebraska book world through writing, film production, or related activity.

Nomination procedures:

The original letter of nomination should include the nominee’s name, address, telephone number, accomplishments, and any relevant supporting documentation. The letter should include the name, title, address, and telephone number of the person or group making the nomination.
At least four additional letters that support and endorse the nomination are required. Such letters may provide further information about the nomination.
The NLA Meritorious Service Award may be given to an individual or group.

The Paraprofessional Section of the Nebraska Library Association (NLA) accepts nominations for the Paraprofessional of the Year Award each year. This award is given annually to a paraprofessional who must be a member of the Paraprofessional Section of NLA who has demonstrated outstanding service in a library setting.

The recipient will be selected on the basis of all of the following criteria:

Innovative programs that the nominee has worked with which have resulted in new or improved library services.
Exceptional volunteer work in library service or related field.
Exceptional use of library resources, local or otherwise.
Significant involvement or leadership in NLA Paraprofessional Section (i.e., holding office, member of a committee, or workshop or conference presentation).

The Paraprofessional of the Year may receive:

A one-year paid membership to NLA, in the Paraprofessional Section.
Fifty dollars.

ALA Emerging Leaders '09

Information about the ALA Emerging Leader 2008-9 program is now available! NMRT wants you to apply to the Emerging Leader 2009 program.

One librarian from NLA will be selected to represent our chapter and be involved with ALA professional leadership. NLA will sponsor the Emerging Leader for $1,000 ($500.00 for Annual and MidWinter conferences) for the year.

ALA member, and

Ready to commit to serve on an ALA, Division, Chapter, or Round Table committee, taskforce or workgroup upon completion of program.

May is Get Caught Reading Month

May is the month to Get Caught Reading in Nebraska libraries. Get Caught Reading is a nationwide campaign to remind people of all ages how much fun it is to read. Check out the many ideas for promoting literacy in your community at www.getcaughtreading.org. Also, Google “get caught reading” for more great ideas from a other libraries.

Children’s Book Week also takes place May 12-19. The Children’s Book Council is nonprofit trade association of publishers of children and young adult books and materials. CBC has a webpage at www.bookweekonline.com/index1.html which offers a history of Children’s Book Week, free posters and activities guide. Children’s Book Week is sponsor the first ever Children’s Choice Book Awards. This is a national children-selected book awards program, that gives children have a chance to vote online for their favorite books.

National Library Week

This year marks the 50th anniversary of National Library Week, a time to celebrate the contributions of libraries, librarians and library workers in communities, schools and special libraries nation-wide. The theme of this year’s observance is Join the Circle of Knowledge @ Your Library, and will be held April 13th through 19th, 2008.

The initiative had its beginnings in the mid-50s when research showed that Americans were spending more time on radios, TV and musical instruments than on reading books. These days, we acknowledge many new claims on leisure time, but librarians continue to be resourceful and responsive to the needs of their patrons, and books and libraries continue to be an important part of the intellectual life of communities.

Be sure to check the Friends of Libraries USA website for ideas on how to promote your library during this week. The ALA website also has sample press releases and PSAs as well as posters and other materials.

Also, the NLA traditionally has collected information about what libraries are doing to celebrate the week on our website. If you would like to share your celebration plans with the rest of the state, please send them to nebraskalibraries@gmail.com and they will be placed on the website. If you are doing anything specifically for National Library Workers Day (April 15), we would love to know that as well!

Barbara Bailey Speaking at ACLU Dinner

Barbara Bailey – a librarian, that was one of the Connecticut 4 that challenged the gag order of the USA Patriot Act, will be the keynote speaker at the ACLU Nebraska Annual Dinner in Omaha, at the DC Centre, social hour at 6 p.m., dinner at 7:15. It would be great to have a number of librarians in the audience, and certainly a coup for us to hear her speak and meet her in person. Barbara was awarded ALA’s 2007 Paul Howard Award for Courage, and also received the 2007 ACLU Roger Baldwin Medal of Liberty.

So, please consider taking advantage of the opportunity and attending. RSVP’s are being asked for by April 4th, cost of the evening is $42.50. You can call ACLU Nebraska’s office to register (476-8091). The ACLU Nebraska Annual Dinner is a nice event with food, drinks, music and speaker. The title of Barbara’s talk will be “Safe and Free”.
