Over the past year, the members of this working group collaborated to develop an online resource to share with NN/LM MCR members and others on how to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with people and organizations outside your library. Each of the five webinars includes information and resources, plus an open time to allow attendees to share thoughts and experiences in the topic area. Strategies for Overcoming Barriers will be presented by Melody Kinnamon, Consumer Health Librarian, Johnson County Library, Overland Park, KS and Chris Engleman, consumer health librarian/consultant. They will each talk about their experiences as librarians working with community organizations, and will discuss challenges faced and strategies used to overcome those challenges.

Outstanding Public Library/Public Health Partnership Awards

Awards will be offered by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, MidContinental Region to recognize public libraries that have had successful public library/public health partnerships involving health information. Recipients will receive a $200 cash award or gift.

Nomination Requirements and Eligibility:

Public library must be an Affiliate or Full Network Member of the NN/LM, MCR. Not a member? Join today, it’s FREE http://nnlm.gov/mcr/services/network/index.html.
Partnership must be between a public library and a public health entity. An entity encompasses those organizations whose focus is to protect and improve the health of a community through education, promotion of healthy lifestyles, and research for disease and injury prevention.
Nominations must demonstrate the success of the partnership
Self-nominations are encouraged

Examples of outstanding partnerships can include, but are not limited to:

Partnerships to improve access to health information for underserved/vulnerable populations
Partnerships to provide access to health information before/during/after a disaster or emergency (i.e. natural disaster, pandemic, man-made disaster)
Partnerships to benefit the overall library communities access to health information
Partnerships to conduct innovative health information outreach programs

1. A summary of the public library/public health partnership supporting success with anecdotes or evidence 2. OCLC Americas Regional Council to hold its first meeting at ALA Midwinter

Plan now to join us for the first meeting of the OCLC Americas Regional Council, which will be held on Friday, January 15, 2010, 8:30 – 11:30 am (ET), in conjunction with the American Library Association (ALA) Midwinter Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts. The meeting location, agenda and online registration details will be announced in the next few weeks. (If you will be unable to attend in-person, please watch for details on how you can view portions of the meeting that will be broadcast live on the Web.) The Americas Regional Council meeting will provide an open forum to discuss issues of importance to its members and to advise OCLC about its products, services, policies and operating direction. The Americas Regional Council Executive Committee, members of OCLC Board of Trustees, Global Council and OCLC Management will be present for interactive discussions. Bring your ideas and be ready to participate. Comprised of members from libraries and other cultural heritage organizations from Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean and the United States, The Americas Regional Council is part of the OCLC cooperative’s new governance structure that consists of three Regional Councils and a Global Council to facilitate member-to-member discussions across the cooperative. Remember, every member has a voice! The Americas Regional Council is interested in what you have to say. Plan now to make this meeting a part of your ALA Midwinter experience. Eighth Annual Beth Streeter Aldrich Foundation Story Award Announced

Original short stories by Nebraska authors are currently being accepted for the 2010 Bess Streeter Aldrich Foundation’s short story contest.

A new division for Intermediate School Students, Grades 3-5, is being added this year.

Story length should be 1,000-2,000 words (there is no minimum word requirement for the Intermediate category) and submissions should be written in the wholesome spirit displayed by Bess Streeter Aldrich in her works. Books by the author that writers can read to get ideas about content and style are:

Intermediate School: 1^st Prize $25.00, 2^nd Prize $15.00, 3^rd Prize $10.00.

Writers, please send a cover sheet with your name, address, e-mail address, phone number, title of story, and two copies of your story, one with your name and one without. Include a line telling how you learned about the contest. For students, add age, grade, school, and teacher’s name to the cover sheet. Please enclose a SASE for return of contest results. Stories will not be returned. Families of Bess Streeter Aldrich Foundation Board Members are not eligible.

NLA/NEMA Conference FAQs

The NLA/NEMA 2009 Conference is less than a week away! We hope everyone is ready for a great conference!

To help you prepare, we offer the following FAQs.

1. BYOBH - Bring your own badge holders! You will receive a clip-on badge holder with your name tag, but, if you prefer one that you already have (perhaps with a lanyard), bring it along. If we have more on-site registrations than expected, the late-comers will receive a badge holder that is pinned on. So, you may use the ones provided (which we ask to be returned at the end of the conference) or bring your own!

2. The tour of the Saddlebrook facility and the Cabela's Fun Tour and Gala are open to colleagues and spouses! If you plan to bring a guest, please let us know as soon as possible so there will be enough refreshments for all.

3. If you have designated that you will be taking the tour of the Saddlebrook facility, you will be given a ticket to ride the bus. If you plan on driving your own vehicle, please turn your ticket in so latecomers or guests can ride the bus. Volunteers will be available to take individuals to the facility in their own vehicles if the bus fills up. (Everyone who has already designated they will be coming on the tour will be guaranteed a spot on the bus.)

4. Tickets are not required for the Cabela's Fun Tour and Gala or for the Open Gaming Night - just show up!

5. On-site registrations will be allowed, but you will not be able to purchase meal tickets. Be prepared to pay by cash or check; no credit cards will be accepted. Since you will not be able to purchase meal tickets, we offer the following alternatives: 1) You can attend a luncheon without a meal as long as seats are available or bring in food (sandwiches and coffee) from the conference center's café. 2) You can eat at a nearby fast-food restaurant, the Island Bar & Grill, or the Summer Kitchen Café (all within a few blocks of the conference center).

Report NLA/NEMA Conference Attendance for C.E. Credit

An online form to report your attendance at the various sessions and programs at the NLA/NEMA 2009 Annual Conference is available on the Nebraska Library Commission Website at: http://www.nlc.state.ne.us/libdev/ce/nlaform/ceform09.html. The form works just like last year's--all you have to do is enter your name, check off the programs you attended, and hit the submit button.

If you are going to report your attendance for C.E. credit, please use the form. And remember that attendance at any event must be reported within 90 days.

Credit is recorded only for people who have signed up for the Nebraska Public Librarian Certification Program or for Nebraska library board members.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS! Handheld Librarian II conference online – February 17 and 18, 2010!

THEME: Alliance Library System and LearningTimes invite librarians, library staff, vendors, graduate students, and developers to submit proposals for programs related to the topic of mobile library services for the online conference. Proposals are due November 1, 2009.

TOPICS: The Handheld Librarian II conference will feature interactive, live online sessions and links to recorded events following the conference. We are interested in a broad range of submissions that highlight current, evolving and future issues in mobile library services. Two Local Authors Featured at NLA/NEMA Conference

Two Nebraska authors will be presenting on Friday, Oct. 30, at the NLA/NEMA Conference.

Jason Peter grew up in Middletown, New Jersey, played college football atthe University of Nebraska, and was a NFL first-round draft pick by theCarolina Panthers, where he played for five years before injuries forced him to retire. He is now married and lives in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he co-hosts a sports radio program for ESPN. His memoir, Hero of the Underground: My Journey Down to Heroin and Back, was published in June 2009.

James Solheim decided on a writing career when he had just finished secondgrade. He still has many of his childhood writings, and he even revised a poem he wrote in fifth grade for his book It's Disgusting-and We Ate It! His second book, Santa's Secrets Revealed, explains the secrets behind SantaClaus's worldwide operations. Besides writing books, James Solheim performs Norwegian folk dance and has written folk music. Born in North Dakota, James grew up in Missouri and now lives in Omaha.
