Nebraska Celebrations

Baright Public Library, Ralston

Baright Public Library in Ralston, Nebraska, will be celebrating National Library Week, Week of the Young Child, Children’s Book Week, AND Día del Niño with a community-wide multicultural event on Sunday, April 20th.

Nebraska Library Commission

The Library Commission will be completing our nine-week Learning 2.0 Project http://www.nlc.state.ne.us /netserv/learning2.0/ during National Library Week.

NLC staff , the Library Commissioners, State Advisory Council members, and Regional Library System administrators were invited to participate in the project, experiment and learn about the new and emerging technologies that are reshaping the context of information on the Internet today. The objectives of this program are to:

  • Encourage exploration of Web 2.0 and new technologies by NLC staff.
  • Provide staff with new tools (that are freely available on the Internet) to better support NLC's mission: statewide promotion, development, and coordination of library and information services.
  • Reward staff for taking the initiative to complete 23 self-discovery exercises.

On April 15 we will celebrate Library Worker's day with a pizza party for the staff. Every staff member who completes all 23 things will be entered into a drawing for three donated MP3 players. Two of the players are USB MP3 players capable of holding at least 1GB worth of data, music and/or audio files. These devices can not only be used as a regular USB/Flash drive to store work files, but they can also be used to download and play OverDrive audio books, music and more. The third player is an iPod Nano.

Perkins Library, Hastings College

The Hastings College Perkins Library YouTube Contest in celebration of National Library Week 2008 has born e fruit. We received three wonderful entries and the judges had much difficulty deciding on a winner. Join the 909 (and growing) nation-wide who have viewed the entries at http://www.youtube.com/user /HCPerkinsLibrary since the contest ended. The winner, “The Fabulous Perkins Library,” is a silent, melodramatic film demonstrating how our library can be a lifesaver. “Perkins Library Reading Rainbow (Parody)” is a tongue-in-cheek parody of children's educational television that highlights why our students love (and “hate”) our library. “Life Changing Perkins” cites reasons our patrons love our library, including increased IQs and discussing poetry with librarians. The creators of the winning video (Michael Fahrenbruch, Stephen Cannon, Emily Spearman, Mike Merryman, and Cindy Eschliman) received $15 gift certificates to a local bookstore. All of the other creators received gift certificates to a local coffee shop and novelty jump drives. Wishing your libraries wonderful National Library Week celebrations !
