The Nebraska Library Association recognizes extraordinary library staff and supporters through a series of awards. Many rely on nominations from people in the Nebraska library community. Below are brief synopsis of the awards for NLA its varied sections and round tables,

NLA

MERITORIOUS SERVICE AWARD:
The Meritorious Service Award is given annually to a person, corporation or organization which has contributed to the improvement of library services in a local community; a county, region or state agency; or in library legislation.

Nomination Process: The original letter of nomination should include the nominee's name, address and telephone number; the nominee's accomplishments, and any relevant supporting documentation. The letter should also include the name, title, address and telephone number of the person or group making the nomination. Also required are at least four additional letters which support and endorse the nominations. Such letters may provide further information about the nominee.

The NLA Meritorious Service Award can be made to an individual or group.

Nominations and letters of support must be received by July 30. Nominations remain in effect for two years.

MARI SANDOZ AWARD:
The Mari Sandoz Award recognizes significant, enduring contribution to the Nebraska book world through writing, film production or related activity.

C&U

C & U Distinguished Service Award


It's time to submit nominations for the NLA College & University section's 2016 Distinguished Service Award. The deadline is Friday, September 2, 2016.

 

This award provides a special opportunity to acknowledge a C&U member who has contributed to academic librarianship in Nebraska. This year’s award recipient will be honored during the C&U business meeting at the NLA Annual Conference and will also receive a $100 award. Additional details for submitting nominations are available on the C&U website. Julie Pinnell will answer any questions you may have regarding this process.

Criteria:

1. Service to academic librarianship within the last five years.

2. Active participation in the section at the time of the award.

3. Present or potential service to NLA/ACRL/ALA.

Nominations should be accompanied by a letter of support detailing the candidate's qualifications.

PARAS

Paraprofessional of the Year
The Paraprofessional Section of the Nebraska Library Association (NLA) accepts nominations for the Paraprofessional of the Year Award each year. This award is given annually to a library employee who has demonstrated outstanding service in a library setting.

The recipient will be selected on the basis of the following criteria:

1. Innovative programs that the nominee has worked with which have resulted in new or improved library services.
2. Exceptional volunteer work in library service or related field.
3. Exceptional use of library resources, local or otherwise.

The Paraprofessional of the Year may receive:

1. A one-year paid membership to NLA, in the Paraprofessional Section.
2. Stipend, to be determined by the Para Executive Board.

Nominations are due on August 31 of each calendar year. No nomination form is needed just send an email containing the nominee’s criteria from the items above to the Paraprofessional Section Executive Committee: nlc.para@nebraska.gov.

The Paraprofessional Executive Board will make the final decision on the Paraprofessional of the Year. Winners who are not already active in the Paraprofessional Section will be encouraged to explore and participate in the activities of the section during their free year of membership.


PLTS

Excalibur

The Public Library and Trustee Section of the Nebraska Library Association accepts nominations for the Excalibur Award for Outstanding Public Librarian. This award honors the career accomplishments of a public librarian who has demonstrated an outstanding record of service to his/her local library and to the library profession.

Advocacy

The Public Library and Trustee Section of the Nebraska Library Association accepts nominations for the PLTS Advocacy Award. This award recognizes a trustee, user, friend, foundation, or library board that has provided exceptional support for their local library. The award can be given to an individual or a group.

SCYP

Mad Hatter

PURPOSE To recognize an individual member of the Nebraska Library Profession who has made an
outstanding contribution to School, Children’s and Young People’s librarianship and library
development.

CRITERIA Individual nominated should have demonstrated achievements in the following areas:

  1. Imaginative interpretation of library services
  2. Development of innovative and creative programming for children and young adults
  3. Demonstration of professional contributions to regional, state, and national library organizations, publications, and/or presentations
*Nominee MUST be a member of the School, Children’s and Young People’s Section of NLA.

S&I

S&I Promotion Award

The Special and Institutional Promotion Award recognizes outstanding achievements in marketing/promotion of services in Nebraska’s special and institutional libraries. Winners may be either libraries or employees. The award was started in 1986 as the Specialized Promotion Award and was renamed the Special and Institutional Section Promotional Award in 1989. Awards are not necessarily given every year.

Guidelines

A Nebraska special or institutional library or its employee or group of employees may be nominated. Self- nominations are welcomed.

Nominees need not be a member of the section or a member of NLA.

Nominations for the award are to be sent to tom.schmitz@nebraska.gov by August 1, 2016.

The letter of nomination should include the name, institution and contact information of the nominee, along with a description of the marketing or promotional activities that have been undertaken and their impact. Examples, samples and photos may be included to support the nomination. Additional letters of support for the nomination are not required, but may be submitted.

NMRT

Mentor of the Year

Mentor of the Year nomination: this is for someone who is a leader in your building, or in another building, that is always there for you to dole out professional advice. They go above and beyond to help out wherever needed. If you would like to nominate someone please send a short typed paragraph to dana.schipporeit@fpsmail.org.


Beginning Professional of the Year

Beginning Professional of the Year: this is for someone who has gone above and beyond as a professional, and it's only their first through fifth year as a professional! Send a short paragraph to dana.schipporeit@fpsmail.org if you wish to nominate someone.


TSRT

Sandra Herzinger Award (TSRT Technical Services Advocacy Award)

Nomination Requirements:

Each nominee for the TSRT Technical Services Advocacy award must:

  • be employed in, or formerly employed in, a technical services position in a Nebraska library (According to the TSRT website, technical services includes: acquisitions, collection development, cataloging and classification, preservation, serials control, interlibrary loan and document delivery.)
  • be an active and involved employee of his/her library, as well as an active and involved member of the Nebraska library community
  • have a proven record of demonstrating the value of technical services, both to colleagues within the library community and to library patrons

Nomination Process:

The letter of nomination should include contact information for the nominee (name, position title, address, email address, and telephone number), the nominee's accomplishments, particularly as they relate to the award criteria given above, and any relevant supporting documentation. The letter should also include the name, position title, address, email address, and telephone number of the person or group making the nomination.

Also required are at least two additional letters which support and endorse the nominations. Such letters may provide further information about the nominee.

Nominations and letters of support must be received by August 31, and should be sent to the current TSRT Chair.
