On Tuesday, October 10, Nebraska libraries and librarians lost a champion.  Duane Munson passed away just as conference began.  He will be remembered as a champion of libraries, librarians and literacy in Nebraska. As he traveled selling books and spreading goodwill he shared news of new projects and librarians through his area.

He was fixture at the annual Nebraska Library Association/Nebraska School Librarians Association conference.  You could find him at his booth visiting with old friends or making new ones among those visiting the booths.  He could spin a good story and share a warm smile.  He loved being among people who love books and those who work hard to promote reading and literacy.

He sponsored the Duane Munson scholarship as well as awards for the School, Children’s and Young People’s (SCYP) section of NLA.  Presentation of the scholarship he sponsored was a highlight each year.  He frequently joined in at the luncheons when the new Mad Hatter was awarded to an outstanding youth services librarian.  Duane has left a lasting legacy through his longtime support of libraries and librarians in Nebraska. He will be missed.
